So yeah it's been a few months since I last posted something on here. I recently finished up this Magneto and had to show it off! The red and purple color palette on this one was so unique to me. I had to layer up a few different shades of violets from the copics to get something that worked for me. Who knew you could get such bright colors out of markers. Hopefully more post to follow.

Just a one more day till HeroesCon 2011! I thought I would show a couple new things that I will have available at this years show, a new Deadpool print and my third installment of my hand made sketchbooks.(Thats right "hand made", I print, staple and fold all these bad boys all by myself) This sketchbook is my favorite by far so I'm excited to introduce it at the show. Hope everyone likes it. I put up the Wolverine drawing that I was trying to get ready as a print for Heroes, but just didn't have enough time to pull it off. Hopefully I will have it ready for the next con, which will probably be New York Comic Con (if I can get in again). As for Heroes this weekend, I will be in artist alley at table AA-833. Beside me again will be Adam Goudelock (AA-842) and Chris Uminga and Matt Fletcher (AA-841). And welcome back Kim Feigenbaum and Jay (her husband). Also joining me at my end of the table will be Kelsey Gagnon, who will have a special little book that she made just for you to enjoy. So come by if you can and say hello, should be a fun weekend!

Well it's that time of year again. CONVENTIONS!! First up is Emerald City Comic Con! It's only a week away and I'm almost ready for it. (What a surprise...well I'm shocked.) I will be in the artist alley, table number H-6. I shall be beside my convention counterparts Matt Fletcher and Chris Uminga once again. So if you are in Seattle come say hello. I think I was getting a little burned out on the super heroes so this Planet of the Apes commission was a nice change of pace.
I'm not sure if this is going to help or hurt but I wanted to add my current commission list to the side of the blog. The order shown are the way I received them in, but not necessarily the order in which I'm going to work through them. I can only do so many Deadpools and such before I start to lose my mind, so I've been jumping through the list as they interest me. Since I have so many right now, I'm going to close the list till I can make a dent. I hate to do this because I really have a hard time saying no to work, but if I don't I will have people waiting a year or more for commissions. (I have a few more people to email about ones from the last month, sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet.) When I'm ready to take on more commissions I will post something on here. Thanks again for all the work.

In an effort to post more stuff on the blog I'm going to share more of the in progress sketches from some of the commissions that I'm working on. This Planet of the Apes piece is my current challenge, I actually started this back at the New York Comic Con and am now just getting it finished up. (Hope the owner is not to pissed at me for taking so long, sorry.) I'll put up some more finished commissions next go around.

Oh and I can say for sure now that my first con for the 2011 year is going to be Emerald City Comicon. (Thanks to Chris Uminga and Matt Fletcher!) Last year was the first time I had been out there and I fell in love with the city and I'm so happy I get to go back and visit again.

What an amazing show! One of the best I've had the pleasure to experience so far. I couldn't believe how big this show was... there were so many people at this thing. When I did get up from the table to walk the floor, it was so freaking busy, such a good sign to see that. I think the artist out numbered the actual venders selling comics. My friend Adam came out with me so I wouldn't be going at it alone, big thank you to him for doing that, even though it wasn't that hard convincing him to go. Also, my friends Chris Uminga and Matt Fletcher had their tables right next to ours this time around too, so we all got to hang out a lot over the weekend. They have recently started doing some sick looking digital pieces in their art, so please check out their sites. I got to meet lots of wonderful people at the show and outside of it too. (one very special person in particular, which I hope to get to see again someday). Thanks again to those whose stopped by to say hello. You made the trip even more enjoyable. Chris was kind enough to introduce me to the very talented Christina Strain (my all time favorite colorist). Even though I turned all fan boy on her and couldn't hardly say a word without looking like an idiot. (cough*... loser). We even got to go to the Chesterfest, which I was totally nervous to be at, but still pretty fun. Seeing all the professionals in one room away from the con was pretty exciting.

We stayed an extra day after the con was over to actually walk around and explore Seattle. I kind of broke the bank doing it, but it was so worth it. I never really get to look around at the places we usually go to for cons because we always leave as soon as it's over. We did the tourist thing and walked up toward the Space Needle and took tons of pictures. Next time I go out that way I'm defiantly going out to see some of the surrounding areas away from the city. It was such a beautiful place and all the people there were so nice. I could really see myself living there at some point in my life. So... thank you Seattle for being such a wonderful place and I will be back next year for another Emerald City Con.

I know I've been absent from posting on the blog the last couple of months (due to some f-ed up stuff in my personal life), but I'm getting over it now and ready to get back to work on my art. No more feeling mopey and shit, got to wake the f up and get back to what makes me happy and that being, drawing comics.

I really love how this one turned out and enjoyed getting back into Mike Allred and Peter Milligan's characters again. Made me sad to find out the last three trades of X-Statix are out of print, would really like to finish off my collection, oh well.

I've included some things that I have been working on as of late. Which is mostly commissions and one very special side project (that will hopefully get me out of said day job). To anyone who I have commissions from out there, sorry things are taking so long. I'm slowly getting them done and thank you for being so patient with me. I will try to post prelims of all the ones that I have started, so you know I'm working on them. As you can see above, I'm still in the planning stages on a couple pieces, (Black Knight you still need a lot work) but I thought I'd share anyway. I also posted up a finished piece of another Star Wars character, a Gamorrean Guard. I'm really starting to get into those and I'm sure there will be more to come.

Well, that's it for 2009. It was a great year, learned lots about this business of comics and hopefully will learn more in 2010. Hope everyone has a Happy and safe New Year. Later.

I know it's a month late but I thought I'd share my experience of the Baltimore Con. All I can say is wow, the show was pretty incredible. Marc Nathan and crew put together one heck of a convention.
Some of the highlights for me were that I finally got to meet one of my favorite artist there, J Scott Campbell. Only had to stand in line for like 30 or 40 minutes, but it was worth it. I also got to hang out with Chris Uminga and Matt Fletcher, always nice to see those guys. Chris was even kind enough to suggest to Scott Adsit of 30 Rock to come over to the table and check out my art. That was a pretty exciting experience to be able to chat with him about his work in film and our love of comics. But the best thing was that he commissioned me to do a piece in his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen themed sketch book. I was dumb founded at this because he had a ton of other cool artist renditions in these books (such as Adam Hughes, Eric Canete, Darwin Cooke, Tim Sale, the list goes on). Lets just say that I did not feel worthy enough to be included. I sweated that pic the whole night on Saturday, but I finally came up with a Captain Nemo for him (sorry about the pic above, it was the only one that came out).
The con only being two days went by so quick, but I'm thankful that I was able to stay busy throughout the weekend. Thanks again to all those that came by and said hello. I had so much fun meeting everyone and I will definitely be attending next years show.

Here are couple of commission that I did yesterday at the Hickory Con. The pictures I took of these two are really not that good, but you get the idea. I tried out the card board thing again with the Batman bust and I love the tonal effect I got with it. Thanks again to everyone that stopped by to say hello.

As for other news I received conformation the Baltimore Con table, so that is all set up for October. This will be the first convention that I do outside of North Carolina and I'm super excited for it. Hello! Wow, HeroesCon was so much fun this year and exhausting. Took me a couple of days to recuperate from it. I guess starting it out with lack of sleep really didn't help either, but I got through it. I was able to get through a good portion of the commissions that I took on, but I still have a stack to get through this week. For those of you that I said I will mail back, I'm working on them as fast as I can. I'm hoping to have them finished up by the end of the week to mail back to everyone. I can't thank everyone enough who came by the table and took a look at our art. We even got some professionals to come by and give us some pretty good feed back. I posted some of the better looking commissions that I did at the show. Sorry they are so blurry, I only had my camera to capture them. If anyone would like to send me scans of any of these please do. I would love to have a better record of them.

Since I was working pretty much the whole time I didn't get to walk around the con like I wanted. Which is probably a good thing since I didn't spend as much money as I usually do. I did however get around to see Dustin Nguyen, where I was able to pick up one of my favorite pictures that he did of all the red haired women of comics and he even did a small head sketch of Batman. I also met a really cool colorist named Rico Renzi, check out his awesome body of work. He commissioned the Batgirl picture (above), which is great because I was able to do some more shading work instead of just coloring it in with markers. I had a good mix of commissions this time around. Well enough talk, need to get back to work. I will post up the pictures as I finish them. Heroes Con this weekend

I'm finished and ready to head out the door to Charlotte. Took me all day to finish this Thor up and get my sketchbook printed, but all is done and ready for sale. I only printed 15 books, so we will see how they do. Never done one before so I hope people will be interested in them. The con officially starts tomorrow at 11:00 am, so I'm off to the hotel now. Here is the final colors for my Psylocke piece. Wish I had more time to come up with a better background, but I needed to close the door on this one. I have Thor left to color up before leaving for the Heroes Con this weekend. I'm also trying to finish up a little 2009 Sketchbook for this years show. It will probably end up being 20 pages or so with mostly line art and some commission work that I've done from the past year or so. I will post more about it later.

The other exciting news, at least I think of it as pretty cool, is that my Nightcrawler piece was chosen to be on the Daily Devaitions page on Devaint Art.com. That blew my mind, never even knew about that before. I have gotten a ton of responses since they posted that up, it's amazing how many people are on that site.

Been a week or so since I last updated, so I thought I'd share this Psylocke that I just finished up. I haven't decided if I want the glowy hand thing or not, I'll fix it when I go to color it. Animazement '09 table set-up and Adam.

Well as you can see this years Animazement was really successful and a lot of fun. I finished every commission that I took on and even sold out a print. I know that's not much but it was quite an accomplishment for me. I usually have to finish up commissions at home and mail them out. We also tried out a new set up for the table and it worked perfectly. Even when people were looking through the books on the table you could still see some of the prints hanging above. Probably the best set up so far. Each year we do this we seem to get more and more sales. Hopefully our Heroes Con will be even better and we can get even more exposure.
I included several blurry pictures of the commissions that I did. Wish I had a scanner to get that Chun Li image, it turned out rather nice. And I think that is the first time that I drew a decent looking Superman. I'm still trying to get used to drawing on those small sketch cards so those were not some of my favorite pieces this time around.
All in all this Animazement was the best so far and I think a lot of that had to do with changing the venue site to the Raleigh Convention Center. It had so much more space for all the people to run around and not feel so cluttered up being stuck against a wall. The artist alley was pretty much contained inside one giant ballroom which was nice being separated from all the chaos that goes on outside.

Well, I'm off to finish up a ton of work for the Heroes Con, which is in 3 weeks. I will try to post anything new as I finish up stuff. Keep checking back.

I have just few more hours before I get on the road to my next convention. And I finally finished up the colors on this Nightcrawler that has been sitting around for a while now. Had to change up the color scheme a little bit because there was way to much pink and purple for my taste. I tried out a green and orange glow for the bamf smoke and it stuck so I'm quite pleased with it now. I had a great time at the Hickory Con this past Saturday. Met some cool artist and got to hang out with ones that I knew from previous cons. I tried my hand at doing some of these sketch card commissions for folks this con. I've never done them before and was curious to see if people would like them. I was working on a Wolverine to show as an example and before I could finish it people were already asking me to do them one. I posted three that I got pictures of before I gave them out (sorry for the blurriness). They are pretty tiny to draw detail stuff so I might keep them to just close ups and busts. But this is something that I will defiantly try out again.

Asgardian goddess of death, Hela

As promised here is the finished piece of Hela. I tried to represent her giant stature by elongating her a bit more than a normal person. I was going for a real alien look, long and thin. Took me a while to get into the classic Walt Simonson take on some of the Asgards, but they are a lot of fun to draw. The designs are so over the top, just what comics are supposed to be like.

Just finished up this commission of Wonder Woman. The client really wanted a romantic image of Wonder Woman with Batman's cape and cowl, a secret love affair maybe. I had a couple sketches that I couldn't decide between so I gave the client the choice and he chose this one. I enjoyed this because I was able to really focus on her face and convey that loving emotion between the two. My original idea for colors was to just do the black and warm grays for Batman's cape and cowl, but I've been reading Detective with Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen and I love his style with Bats where he uses the blue and grey. It is kind of like the old school colors that I grew up with watching the old Justice League cartoons.

Well the Boone Comicon turned out to be a fun little con. For being such a small town convention, a lot of people came through. Saw people I knew from work and met some cool new artist that were local to the surrounding areas. I also found out from the guys running the con, that the next one will be in October, so hopefully they will keep it going for years to come. The only thing that bumed me out was that no one wanted any commissions. But I did draw up this Batman sketch while I sat there, thought it turned out pretty nice. I drew it on that semi-smooth bristol from Strathmore and I made a very cool discovery with it. No matter how much I saturated the paper with the markers, it did not bleed through to the other side at all. Very amazing stuff.

Boone Comicon Tomorrow

Thought I'd share this Shazam drawing that I did last year for a commission. I've wanted to recolor it for awhile now because I was not very pleased with how the first version turned out. I spent a few hours working on it one night this week and was so into it that I totally forgot to save it from time to time (stupid mistake). Well, my computer decided to do an update, which resulted in a restart of my system and all that work disappeared. So actually this is the third version of this little drawing. But I'm finally starting to get comfortable with Photoshop again and hopefully I can produce more colorful and dynamic images this year. This image will be available as a print at this years cons too.

Jocasta Commission

Here are some process shots of my latest commission, Jocasta. I have to confess I did not know that much about her. She looked familiar but had no idea she was an Avenger. Anyway, hope you enjoy a look into my work method.

I really like the softness of the blue pencil lead in my pictures and it's hard to ink over them all the time but it makes it easier to color over later.

Gray and black ink on Stonehenge, 9x12", 2009.

She was looking a little empty inside all that blank whiteness, so I included some wire work coming from her, like she was in the process of being created.
I like the effect it gave the picture as a whole, gave it a more balanced composition.
For Jocasta I inked her in a light gray Copic Multiliner which kept her softness and for the wires I just used a standard black.

The metal look to her body was hard to render with the Copics. I started out with the lightest grays I had and slowly worked more blue tones into it. The color that I found to work the best with her metal skin was Pale Blue Gray (B60), light but just enough punch of color to bring her out from the white background. I wanted her to have a glow about her, like liquid metal, so I made the wire work behind her darker shades of blues and grays. They have a dirty rusty feel to them, where Jocasta is shiny and new.

Here is a nice process look at one of my latest commission pieces. I always enjoy looking at the process of other artist work so I thought I'd share mine.

To start out I usually do a few thumbnails to get the feel of the character. Most of the time its just a bunch of shapes to get the composition of a pose. Lately I found myself using the computer to do this process so I don't end up wasting a lot a paper. The next phase is just doing a small rough sketch to flesh out the character's costume and anatomy. Then I will blow that up on the computer and transfer it to another sheet of paper. This is mainly to get rid of any unnecessary marks and to have an overall clean drawing. I knew I was going to have to color over this one so the line work is not as tight as some my other drawings.

The next step for me is to just ink over it so the lines don't get lost in the marker. I never realized how much detail Vader had with his costume. This is probably my favorite of the three processes for him. The inks turned out better than I could have hoped. I left it fairly simple with the lines, no hatching or heavy blacks because the colors should keep him rounded out.

Last up is the coloring. Nothing really special here just finding the light source and have at it. I love coloring with markers so I always jump at the chance to add color to commissions. This one was a challenge because he is pretty much wearing all black. I did not just want to use black with white outlines, so I went the full gray scale on this one. The only part of him that is true black is the tech stuff on his chest and belt.

Just went with a simple mug shot on Victor Von Doom here. Took some liberties with his mask. I was going for more of an old school look but not that satisfied with it. Might redo it if I get some time. I got some new commissions so I will take a break from my work and focus on those. But keep checking back because I will post them as I finish and I have to say there are some pretty cool characters in the bunch. Later.

Well this took longer than necessary to finish. but at least it's done. I tried out this new semi-smooth bristol board from Strathmore for this piece. I found it a little difficult to get used to at first because if you mess up a line or change your mind about something, there is no erasing it. I found myself using a lighter touch with it, which is fine, and I like the overall effect it gave to the final drawing. I guess the next test is trying out some ink pens and markers on it. Apparantly this is the same paper that Marvel gives it's artist to draw up their pages.
Next up on the list is Dr. DOOM.

Here is something new that I have been playing around with. He has gone through a few changes since I first sketched him out. The horns were bugging me from the start. They were looking a little to ram like, so I pointed them out a little more to keep them from being so chunky. I have been wanting to try out some watercolors for a while now and I thought this guy would be perfect to practice with. I'll post the finished image when I'm through. Hope ya like.

I finally finished up this Aquaman commission. Had a tough time finding a good underwater pose for him. The bottom image is from my moleskine. I went through quite a few drawings to get his face the way I wanted. I finally stuck with this one. Thought it showed his arrogance and distrust of humans.

This is a detail of another painting that I did for the show this past Friday. I went with a flat graphic look for this one. The design of the character and the colors turned out so well that I'm thinking about making this my logo of sorts for the Sweatybuffalo site. I just have to tweak it a little to make it fit.

I should have the pictures from the opening soon. Unfortunately I did not get any pictures myself of the opening but my sister and friend did so I'm waiting for them to send me some.

Crunch time...

Just wanted to show a little bit of what I have been working on for the last month now. These images are from pieces that will be in my first ever solo show at the Nth gallery here in Boone, NC. The opening reception will be on Friday, October 3rd, from 7:30 until everybody leaves.
I still have a lot to do before the end of the month. But I'm pleased with how everything is turning out. As of right now I will have 9 to 10 new pieces going into the show. I will post more as I get them finished. Hope you like.

Just finished up this image of Poison Ivy for a website called Concept Art. They do a bunch of weekly contest like character of the week and creature of the week. It's open to anyone that is registered to the site and there are a ton of talented people on there. The theme for this weeks character of the week was Dark Knight Villians, I included a link so that you can see the final idea I had for her. After seeing Dark Knight I couldn't pass up this opportunity to see what I could come up with. I think this is my favorite image that I have done recently. Gallery Show in Connecticut

While I was at Heroes Con this year, I got a wonderful offer to submit a piece of art relating to super heroes to a gallery in Connecticut. I ended up submitting the Cap painting above along with the pencil drawing of Medusa that I did earlier this month. The exhibition is entitled Identity Theft: Reinventing the Comic Hero and it is being held at the Guildford Art Center in Guilford, CT. The opening reception is July 11th from 5 - 9pm. The exhibition will be on display from July 11 till Aug. 14. I included a link that has more info about the event. From what I've seen of the pieces that were sent to me through email, this show is going to be awesome. Wish there was a way I could get up there to see the show, but I can't get off from work. Anyway, a big thank you goes out to Chris Uminga and Matt Fletcher for the opportunity to show my stuff out there.

HEROES!!!

Sorry, Heroes Con has been over for almost a week and I haven't posted anything yet. I've been busy working on some new stuff since I got back (more to follow). I will defiantly post it as soon as I'm finished.

Anyway, Heroes was so much fun this year. Everyone I met was super nice. I was so pleased to see that my art got such a good response this time around too. I'm slowly getting used to producing more and more work and it is paying off. I actually got a couple of offers to do some real deal published work. Maybe even one through IDW? I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one.

The coolest thing this year was that I got a lot of request for commissions. I've posted a few that I was able to finish, but I still have a bunch to do. So thank you again to the people that are waiting patently for their commissions. I had so much fun talking to everyone I met. Two artist that I have to mention, Chris Uminga and Matt Fletcher ,they had some really awesome stuff. Check them out, I think you will like.
Another down to earth guy that I met was Scott Sava. He is the creator of a book called The Dreamland Chronicles, it is an all ages read graphic novel. I haven't got a chance to read some it yet but he has most of it online for free. Looks pretty cool though from what I saw. Scott stopped by the table and really enjoyed my art. He invited me over to his booth to check out some of the stuff that he has been working on. He even said that maybe I could do a cover for one of his Dreamland books thats being published through IDW. I think my jaw was hanging open when he said that. He also does children's books, which is something that I've always wanted to do as well. Just talking to him gave me so much hope that I can make it in this business. He knows what its like to be the little guy just starting out and he said that he could help to get my foot in the door. That was so inspiring for me to hear that. Thanks again Scott.

As far as the exhibitor booths, I bought my share in weight of trades and hard covers. Those $5 trade booths were a real down fall for me this time. On Sunday, this one guy ended up selling his Marvel titles for 75% off cover price. Let's just say a great deal of money was deducted from my credit card.

I also got to spend some time with my friends from college, which is always a crazy experience. I'm like the only one that still lives in the mountains of NC, so these cons are like the only time we get to see each other. I'm trying to see if we can do some more cons next year like Baltimore, but we have to save up some money to do that. Charlotte is the closest place that we can all meet without costing us an arm or leg, so we will have to wait and see. Make sure you check out their websites too. Adam Goudelock and Kim Feigenbaum.

All in all I had a really great time. It was inspiring and really got me excited to work on some new things for next year. Heroes Con 2008 was the best I've been to in a really long time. Can't wait till next year to do it again.

I just finished this Medusa drawing last night. I'm still working on the color version, but I'm pretty sure I will have it done in time for Heroes Con. I'm actually going to have these printed off at the original size. It will be the first time having some prints that are larger than 8 1/2x11". I'm hoping that they will sell well.

Here is a flyer cover image for Cheap Joe's Art Stuff. I just finished the pencils and now I just have to put some color to it. It is actually their ad for Heroes Con, they ended up purchasing a booth this year to sell some of their art products. Thought I'd share a couple of new things I've been working on this past weekend. This is a piece that I'm working on for my first solo art show. It will be on display at The Nth Degree Gallery in Boone, NC for the month of October. I'm debating on transferring it to a wood panel to paint it since the digital version came out so well.

I liked it so much that I used it for my self promotional post cards. I just sent off the color and type version to get printed. Hopefully they will make it in time for Heroes Con so I can give them out to folks. Make sure you come by for one and many other new prints.

Here is a commission that I did for a guy at the Hickory Con a couple of weekends ago. It is the second Sasquatch that he has asked for, hope he likes this one. This is the first time I worked on some toned paper with white pastel pencil for highlights. I really like how it turned out and will have to try it again sometime.

Art-By-Numbers Reception

Well the reception for the Art-By-Numbers show was tonight and considering it was raining all night, a lot of people showed up for it. I haven't seen that many people in that gallery in quite sometime, so I'm glad the show was a great success for them. I was also surprised to see that I won second place for my entry into the show. There were some great pieces in the show and I was really excited to be recognized. I can't thank the Nth Gallery enough for having events like this to celebrate local artist.

Here is my submission for a juried art show at a local gallery here in Boone, NC. The theme for the show is Art-by-Numbers. My piece is called "Number Cruncher" and it is acrylic gouache on panel. I literally just finished it 30 minutes before it was due at the gallery. I probably could have done a little more to it, but I'm pleased with how it turned out. I think the frame took me longer to make than the actual painting. Who says procrastination is bad?
